Published by Plein sud éditions, the book brings together new essays by Julie Bélisle and Charles Guilbert, edited by Hélène Poirier, Executive Director and publisher of Plein sud, a contemporary art exhibition centre in Longueuil. Design realized by Raphaël Daudelin of Studio Feed.

For over twenty-five years, Luce Meunier has engaged in a dialogue with painting in its most essential materiality. Pigments, canvas, repeated gestures: each work bears the trace of a patient and rigorous exploration. This monograph unveils a complete panorama of the artist’s demanding and ever-renewed practice, entirely devoted to the infinite territory of painting and a defining figure of contemporary art in Quebec.

Bringing together artwork reproductions, studio documentation, and exhibition views, the monograph Luce Meunier. Champ offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s career. Author Julie Bélisle traces Meunier’s multiple bodies of work produced over the years, highlighting the importance of daily discipline, repeated gestures, and simplicity of means. For his part, Charles Guilbert examines how Luce Meunier has established a living relationship with painting, bringing to light the decisive role of gestures, chance, and human relationships in the making of her world.

This publication was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (Support for Organizational Activities – Publication component) and Groupe Mercille.

Biography

Born in Montreal in 1973, Luce Meunier has developed a self-taught experimental art practice centered around the power of materials to act and react. With a deliberate economy of means, she has explored the conditions in which images emerge, generated as much by the materiality of the medium as by the properties or structure of the support.

Having lived in Montreal since the beginning of her career, she set up in 2024 her new creative laboratories in her home-studio in Valcourt in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, surrounded by the wide open spaces of nature.

Meunier has distinguished herself in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada and beyond. Her work has been featured in retrospective exhibitions at the Maison de la culture Claude-Léveillée (Montreal), and the Centre d’exposition Yvonne L. Bombardier (Valcourt), in solo shows at Bradley Ertaskiran (Montreal), Christie Contemporary (Toronto), the Centre d’exposition Plein sud (Longueuil), Centre Clark (Montreal), and Sobering Galerie (Paris). Group exhibitions include the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, the Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine de Trois-Rivières (BIECTR), the Karsh-Masson Gallery (Ottawa), and the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina). Meunier’s works can be found in various private and institutional collections, including the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (CPOA), the National Bank of Canada, the Royal Bank of Canada, as well as the Desjardins, Hydro-Québec, City of Montreal, and Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec collections, among many others.

Luce Meunier is represented by Bradley Ertaskiran in Montreal.
