Discovering Contemporary Art aims to develop students’ artistic skills through themes and techniques such as clothing recycling, archival photographs, reconstructed places, etc. These activities, inspired by the practices of local artists, can be integrated into learning and the general education areas of living together, citizenship, as well as environment and consumption.

Workshops Offered

  • (Re)constructing My Favorite Room: collage and dry pastel drawing
  • Our Sewing Lines: quilt with recycled fabrics
  • Reweaving My City: weaving printed archival photographs

(Re)constructing My Favorite Room

Description: (Re)constructing My Favorite Room is inspired by the works of artist Nicolas Fleming. In his work, the artist revisits built spaces and recreates new versions on a human scale. In this workshop, students explore image collage and dry pastel drawing to create dynamic compositions in which their favorite room in the house is reimagined.

Techniques explored: Dry pastel drawing, cutting and collage
Materials: Pencil (and sharpener), dry pastels, scissors, glue stick, ruler, colored pencil or marker, images to cut out, white Cartridge paper (8.5 x 11)

Our Sewing Lines

Description: Inspired by the practice of Guinean and Quebecois artist Kesso Saulnier, this workshop invites students to create a collective quilt from fabric samples recovered from Plein sud’s inventory. By cutting and collaging unique shapes from various fabrics, they explore patterns specific to the clothes they wear or prefer. The goal of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the particularities of textile language.

Techniques explored: Assembly of recycled fabrics and quilting (secondary: embroidery)

Materials: Recycled fabrics, velcro, fabric glue, scissors (secondary: thread and needle)

Reweaving My City

Description: Using the photo-weaving technique, students are immersed in the discovery of historical archival photographs of the city of Longueuil. This project is inspired by the artistic practice of Michaëlle Sergile. The artist uses the Jacquard technique to recompose images taken from archives from the postcolonial period from 1950 to today. All the participants’ creations form a mosaic of various reimagined Longueuil landscapes.

Techniques explored: Cutting archival photos, weaving

Materials: scissors, glue, cardboard, masking tape

Artist Portraits has the main goal of introducing your students to contemporary art through discovering the approach of a Quebec artist. During the workshop, your students will create a work inspired by one of the following artistic practices:

  • Mathieu Lévesque: painting on cut-out canvas and creation of trompe-l’œil marble faux finishes
  • Caroline Monnet: paper cutting in traditional Anishinaabe sacred geometric shapes
  • François Lacasse: introduction to abstract art through collage and drawing organic shapes

Mathieu Lévesque

Description: Mathieu Lévesque is interested in the creative process and the materiality of paint. In his exhibition Les monochromes légers (The Light Monochromes), which he presented at Plein sud, the artist explores the forms and contours of the painting and attempts to push its limits. He creates non-rectangular works on polystyrene (shaped canvas) and paints trompe-l’œil marble faux finishes. The juxtaposition of materials such as marble and polystyrene allows for an exploration of the history of material culture while jointly exploring those of architecture, sculpture, and painting, highlighting the duality between high art and low art. For this workshop, students will have the opportunity to create an abstract painting experience on polystyrene, inspired by the artist’s work.

Techniques explored: Creating texture with acrylic paint on polystyrene and intaglio tracing
Materials: Acrylic paint (primary colors + white and black), sponges, brushes, string, cork, wooden stick, feather, cut polystyrene, glitter powder, white newsprint

Caroline Monnet

Drawing inspiration from traditional Anishinaabe sacred geometry in her practice, Caroline Monnet transforms construction materials in a process that reflects the complexity of Indigenous identities and bilateral heritage. Through exploration of geometric shapes and symmetry, elementary school students are guided to create openwork and layer colored sheets. Secondary school students cut symmetric geometric shapes from colored Tyvek papers to create a three-dimensional assembly inspired by the artist’s work A Whole Made of Many Parts (2019).

Techniques explored: Folding, cutting, and assembly of Tyvek papers

Materials:

  • Elementary: Colored cardstock sheets (cycles 1 and 2), colored Tyvek (cycle 3), scissors, split head pins, pencil
  • Secondary: Colored Tyvek sheets, precision knives or scissors, staples, pencil

François Lacasse

This workshop offers an exploration of color multiplication, organic shapes, and their superposition, inspired by the work of François Lacasse, a painter known for his large abstract paintings. This activity, very simple in its preparation, involves various techniques including drawing with wooden pencil, felt-tip pen, and oil pastel, using templates. It also allows students to exercise various creative faculties including fine motor skills and abilities while exploring intense visual compositions.

Techniques explored: Drawing, superposition of organic shapes, collage, cutting (except for preschool and first cycle of elementary)
Materials: Dry pastel, wooden pencil or felt-tip pen, glue stick, white Cartridge paper (8.5 x 11)

Looking Good is a technical drawing workshop program aimed at enriching students’ skills in landscape drawing, character drawing, and observational drawing, connected to their interests and knowledge. In the form of a school visit, the activities aim to provide historical and theoretical context specific to the techniques being taught and to support student learning through practical exercises. The workshop concludes with the creation of a personal artwork that incorporates the techniques studied.

  • How to draw a landscape?: This workshop offers historical and theoretical concepts about landscapes, their role in art history, and the different ways of representing them since the 15th century. Students will learn about image composition and the use of perspective to create landscapes that meet their expectations.
  • How to draw a character?: This workshop is popular among students from grades 3 to 6. Students will be introduced to character drawing techniques: face shapes, facial expressions, emotions, human proportions, and body positions. The goal is to enable participants to draw realistic and proportional characters that they can enhance with emotions.
  • How to do observational drawing?: From exquisite corpse to blind drawing, this workshop introduces students to specific approaches to observational drawing. In addition to an overview of the historical and cultural evolution of observational drawing in art history, students will be equipped with new drawing techniques such as the grid method.

In addition to the programs Discover Contemporary Art, Looking Good, From Material to Artwork, and Artist Portraits, any teacher can also request our educator’s expertise to create a personalized activity based on artistic, historical, social or technical themes of their choice.

Would you like to discuss ecology, poverty, graffiti, social criticism in art, abstract art, transformation, or any other topic with your students? Our educator can develop a custom presentation and creative workshop related to the theme desired by the teacher, or connected to the work or approach of one or several artists working in contemporary arts.

Here are some examples of personalized activities that were conducted during the 2017-2018 season:

Creation of Carnivorous Plants – in class

3rd cycle, École primaire du Jardin-Bienville (activity requiring two sessions)

This activity was created based on a theme chosen by the 6th grade teacher, namely the creation of carnivorous plant sculptures. First, the Plein sud educator supported the teacher in planning the activity and creating appropriate introductions for the workshop with the students. Then, in collaboration with the teacher, she developed a basic technique for the actual creation of the plants and prepared a list of materials needed for the workshop. During the two sessions planned for the project, our educator introduced the available materials and techniques for their use to the students. Along with the teacher, she then helped supervise the teams during the creation of sculptures representing carnivorous plants.

Art Analysis – in class

6th grade, École primaire Gentilly and 5th and 6th grade, École primaire Sainte-Claire Brossard

During this classroom activity, students became familiar with a method for analyzing artwork. Our educator explains the rules and steps that must be followed when properly observing and interpreting both traditional and contemporary artwork. The educator introduces students to this method using educational materials (description of analysis steps, methodological guides and questionnaire) and practical exercises.

Good-to-Go Education Kits

With the goal of democratizing art, Plein sud has developed a new educational program in the form of ready-to-use educational kits. The activities and workshops proposed in these kits make certain exhibitions from Plein sud’s programming accessible to everyone by offering the perspective of an enriching artistic experience.

This is a formula that aims to break down distance barriers by allowing students to discover, from the classroom, an exhibition that was presented at Plein sud, along with artists and related workshops.

Isabelle Hayeur Educational Kit

This educational kit offers a virtual and interactive tour of the exhibition “(D)énoncer” by artist Isabelle Hayeur, presented at Plein sud in 2020-2021. The digital kit made available to the teacher includes:

  • A practical guide for the teacher;
  • A virtual tour of the exhibition through an interactive video;
  • Fun, interactive and reflective activities related to the featured artist (some elements will need to be printed in multiple copies by the teacher).

As part of this free offer, educational materials are provided in digital format only. The teacher must ensure the availability of necessary school supplies for students (cardboard, glue, scissors, pencils, etc.). It is possible to combine a visual arts creative workshop with the virtual tour of the exhibition provided in the kit. A practical guide for the visual arts workshop will then also be made available to the teacher.
