[Taking the Road, Making Time: Interventions with the Landscape]
Emerging from research initiated during a residency in the natural landscape of Spain’s Montes de Toledo, Faire la route, dégager le temps : interventions avec le paysage [Taking the Road, Making Time: Interventions with the Landscape] explores the relationships between the body, territory, and its living entities. Claudia Bernal further develops the notion of the body-territory from a more-than-human perspective, inviting us to reflect on the sensory, intimate, and political dimensions of our occupation of space.
This immersive installation brings together sculpture, sound, photography, and video, and will be activated through a performance conceived in collaboration with dancer Danae Serinet.
Biography
Claudia Bernal is a Colombian-born interdisciplinary artist whose practice lies at the intersection of visual arts, performance theatre, and literature. Her work explores the relationships between the body, territory, migration, and identity, approaching art as a form of action and resistance. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, printmaking, photography, drawing, sound, video, and various objects, often brought together within performative installations.
She holds a PhD in Art Studies and Practices from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and, in 2023, completed a postdoctoral research-creation fellowship at the Centre de recherche Cultures – Arts – Sociétés (UQAC). Her background in visual arts, theatre, and philology informs a practice in which text, gesture, and materiality unfold as visual and performative languages. Her interdisciplinary works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally, in museums, artist-run centres, galleries, theatres, and public spaces.
