Presentation of the artist:

Amanda Préval is a Caribbean-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Longueuil, on the unceded territory of Karonhiatsi’kowáhne. Through the practice of sewing synthetic hair extensions, they create wearable objects that come to life through performative gestures and abstract forms with intentionally ambiguous functions. The manipulation of the hair extensions reflects a desire to challenge the industrial automation of braiding while ultimately celebrating this ancestral art form. Amanda holds a Diploma in Visual Arts from Collège Édouard-Montpetit and is currently completing a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts Education at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).

In 2022, Préval presented their body of work at La Biennale de l’art noir Afflux, in the group exhibition Entrelacs, as well as at the 14th edition of the Festival Art Souterrain, Voies/Voix Résilientes. In 2023, alongside Joliz Dela Pena and Nana Quinn, they participated in the collective performance What to Shed, What to Carry, under the guidance of La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse. In 2024, Préval presented their work in the exhibition FILS FLUX FIGMENTS at Livart, and contributed to the art direction of the music video LISA, produced and performed by Montreal rap artist HDK. In summer 2025, they participated in the Céline Bureau creative residency.

The artist and Plein sud:

After leading the Art Soleil art camp for two years, Amanda joined the Plein sud team last year to continue their educational mission as an art Educator and Visitor Services Coordinator.
