Presentation of the artist:

Born in San Diego, California, Anne Ashton has lived and worked in Québec for more than thirty-five years. A graduate in Visual Arts from San Diego State University, she also studied at the University of California in Santa Barbara. Since 1992, her artistic practice has explored the interconnections between the forms, systems, and cycles of the natural world. Her works, often presented as polyptychs or installations, evoke visual ecosystems where each element, though distinct, contributes to an organic and interdependent whole.

Her work draws on a multitude of references: from hyperrealism to surrealism, from alchemy to cosmology, as well as folklore, music, and myths. She is particularly interested in subjects considered marginal, threatening, or lacking conventional beauty, revealing their uniqueness within a larger system. Her paintings, sometimes accompanied by found objects or by images and words painted outside the frame, invite the viewer to feel a sense of connection with the work, with art, but above all with the natural world to which we belong.

Since the 1990s, Anne Ashton has presented her work in some thirty solo exhibitions across Canada and the United States, notably at Oboro, Plein sud, Galerie Clark, the Musée régional de Rimouski, Maison de la culture Marcel-Robidas (Longueuil), Galerie Karsh-Masson (Ottawa), Eastern Edge (St. John’s, NL), and Raw Gallery (Tucson, AZ). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Art contemporain du Québec (MNBAQ, ongoing exhibition), Dialogues dans le temps (Musée régional de Rimouski, 2022), Fait main / Hand Made (MNBAQ, 2018), Le temps file (MNBAQ, 2017), Lieux (Musée régional de Rimouski, 2011), and Sublime démesure (MAC des Laurentides, 2009), as well as Les Dix ans de Clark (2000).

Her works are part of public collections including the MNBAQ, the Musée régional de Rimouski, the City of Longueuil, and the Canada Council Art Bank, as well as private collections in Québec, Canada, and the United States. Her work has been supported by several creation, dissemination, and research grants awarded by the Conseil des arts de Longueuil, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Canada Council for the Arts. She has also benefited from residency and travel grants, underscoring the importance of mobility and dialogue in her practice.
