Presentation of the artist:
Originally from Taiwan, Chih-Chien Wang has been living and working in Montreal since 2002. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University, after studying film and theatre in Taiwan. His artistic practice is rooted in the observation of everyday life, delicately revealing simple gestures, ordinary objects, and fleeting moments that shape our existence. Through photography, he explores the connections between intimacy, memory, and presence, in constant dialogue with the city he inhabits and the people around him.
His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions, including at Maison de la Culture Janine-Sutto (2025, 2022), Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain gallery (Montreal, 2023, 2020, 2017), Arsenal Contemporary Art in New York (2023), Plein Sud (2019), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2016), Mississauga Art Gallery (2015), Fonderie Darling (Montreal, 2015), Expression (Saint-Hyacinthe, 2014), the Musée régional de Rimouski (2013), and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2012).
In 2017, he received the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography, recognizing the poetic strength and rigor of his approach. His works are part of numerous public and corporate collections, including those of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée de l’Élysée (Lausanne), as well as the collections of Hydro-Québec, National Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank, Caisse Desjardins, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, BMO Financial Group, the City of Montreal, and the Canada Council Art Bank.
Through a sensitive and thoughtful approach, Chih-Chien Wang captures what often escapes the eye: silences, margins, traces. His work invites us to slow down, to feel, to connect… with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.
