Presentation of the artist:
Born in Moldova, Daria Elas immigrated at a young age to Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). She first pursued university studies in psychology before turning to visual and media arts. A graduate of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), she was awarded the Faculty of Arts Fund Scholarship (2021) and a Research and Creation Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts (2024). In recent years, her work has been presented in several group exhibitions, notably at Centre Clark, Place des Arts, Galerie de l’UQAM, Espace Transmission, and the Jardins Racine Art Centre. Alongside her artistic practice, Daria is currently completing a graduate diploma at HEC Montréal and is actively involved in organizations such as the Service artistique du sous-sol (SAS) cooperative. In the coming year, she will take part in Présences, a project presented at Caravansérail (Rimouski, QC), as well as a residency at Centre Sagamie (Alma, QC).
Daria’s multidisciplinary practice weaves together ceramics, textiles, video, and 3D animation to create environments where perception becomes experience. She explores how material can embody sensitivity, and how form, light, and texture shape an affective space. For over a year, she has been deepening her research on the luminous translucency of porcelain, envisioning light as the inner breath of matter. This exploration has led to a first series of light sculptures, including fleur des murs (Wallflower), where functionality and introspection converge in a single poetic gesture.
The artiste and Plein sud:
Daria joined the Plein sud team in 2022, first as an educator specializing in contemporary art, before taking on the coordination of exhibitions and related activities. She is also responsible for the centre’s digital presence and communications, helping to broaden the reach of its programming and initiatives within the community.
