Presentation of the artist:
“I sometimes describe myself as the result of a suburban/car/above-ground pool combination, living and working in the suburbs of Mascouche. It is from this Mascouche suburban soil that my core convictions and research directions take root. I collect and gather objects to imagine speculative machines that reflect on the current capitalist system. Fais-moi l’art presented my work in a solo exhibition in the summer of 2023. I have participated in several group exhibitions with Rond-Point artist center, at Collège Lionel-Groulx, and at Chapelle des Cuthbert. I also took part in a residency with the Rond-Point artist center. As a studio assistant, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Sébastien Cliche, Geneviève Roy, Dominic Papillon, and Alexandre David. I am currently completing a Bachelor’s degree in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM.”
Émile Riopel’s sculptural and image-based practice is rooted in the suburban landscape. By repurposing everyday objects from their original function, Riopel seeks to question what seems self-evident and to create moments of uncertainty imbued with an enigmatic and playful quality. His work favors ephemeral and modular forms, maintaining the idea of constant movement. This movement is shaped by themes of construction sites, non-places, and labor.
