Présentation de l’artiste :
Mathilde Varanese holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual and Media Arts from UQÀM, where she received the Pierre-Luc d’Orsonnens Excellence Scholarship and the Jacques-de-Tonnancour Award of Excellence. In 2025, she presents her first solo exhibition at Galerie C.O.A, made possible by the Altitude/C Contemporary Art Grant. She also takes part in several group exhibitions, including Comme un bruit de métal at Projet Casa (2023), for which she received support from the Longueuil Arts Council. That same year, she was awarded the Desjardins Emerging Artist Prize by the CAL.
She is actively involved in the dissemination of the arts, notably through her role as coordinator at the Giverny Foundation and as programming assistant at the Plein sud exhibition center, where she now serves on the board of directors.
Mathilde Varanese’s practice stems from a fascination with artistic figures who use adornment as a tool for communication. From Derrida to Dalida, flamboyant attire contributes to the creation of a public persona that also influences everyday gestures. She examines the boundaries that arise between her personal and professional life, seeking to define the degree of authenticity within each. Her project burn out country club borrows the codes of tennis to satirize her experience with professional burnout and her relationship to performance anxiety.
The artiste and Plein sud:
Mathilde Varanese worked for more than seven years as part of the Plein sud team. She initially held the position of receptionist, before taking on the role of assistant editor and programmer during the last two years of her position. Since the spring of 2025, she has served on the Plein sud board of directors as an administrator.
