Configurations

Configurations presents the evolution of Grenier’s practice over the past fifteen years through a body of work composed of preparatory drawings, a selection of small studies, and four paintings. The exhibition reveals the strong influence of his formative years at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, the conceptualism characteristic of the West Coast, and the stark social inequalities typical of this major American city. Following his time in the United States, his work adopted a decidedly political stance, focusing on the structures that organize our lives, our societies, and our cities. By examining economic systems as well as their connections to political doctrines and ideologies, Grenier casts a joyfully cynical eye on the power relations at work within these systems, including those of the art world itself. He illustrates the ways in which these configurations do—or do not—accommodate certain realities, and even certain individuals, and how each person’s experience of the world depends on them. In doing so, he exposes the intrinsic absurdity of the very foundations of these systems, often built on principles of exclusion, as well as the fragile shifts that can occur from one idea to another, one conviction to another, and one social status to another.

Configurations

Drawing from a selection of significant works alongside a series of studies, most of them previously unknown to the public, Configurations offers a look back at the last fifteen years of Nicolas Grenier’s painting practice. The exhibition highlights both the technical progression of one of Québec’s foremost painters of his generation and the evolution of a fundamentally conceptual approach. Rooted in a reflection on political systems and the organization of our lives, societies, and cities, Grenier’s art subtly underscores, with a touch of irony, the inherent absurdity of the structures in which we live.

A memirable celebration !

Plein sud wishes to warmly thank the entire community for attending its 40th anniversary festive evening last Thursday, December 4th. Thanks to your presence, this major event successfully celebrated four decades of contemporary art and cultural commitment in Longueuil.

The evening began with the screening of the film Cozic, presented in collaboration with the Longueuil Arts Council, in the presence of Monic Brassard and co-director Céline B. La Terreur. The celebration then continued in Plein sud's exhibition hall, where guests enjoyed delicious local products and collectively celebrated the vitality of contemporary art within our community.

The evening concluded with a highly anticipated moment: the drawing of the fundraising raffle winners, which generated great enthusiasm and connection among the participants.

A successful evening

Thanks to the generosity of participants, ticket sales for the fundraising draw and silent auctions raised a total of $14,500 for Plein sud's activities.

Congratulations to all the winners of the eleven artworks in the draw, as well as to the lucky buyers in the silent auction.

This activity is offered in French only.

La vie d’artiste is back with a brand new program! This edition offers four creative workshops throughout the year, inviting participants to meet, experiment, and discover current artistic practices.

The workshop Jouer avec le vivant (Playing with Life), designed and led by visual artist Noémie Sauvageau, kicks off the season!

Offered free of charge at Plein sud thanks to the support of the City of Longueuil, La vie d'artiste is a program of cultural mediation activities focused on artistic practice. It invites the general public—children and adults aged six and up—to come and create alongside professional artists in a workshop that promotes discovery, exchange, and sharing of artistic approaches and know-how.

Workshop Jouer avec le vivant

Inspired by ecopoetics and writing, Noémie Sauvageau creates ephemeral installations and site-specific works using locally harvested plant materials. Her workshop Jouer avec le vivant (Playing with Life) transposes this approach by offering a sensory and poetic experience centered on working with natural materials: clay, wood, herbs, dried flowers, and fibers. A large table laden with natural materials invites participants to experiment freely through modeling, rubbing, assembling, or printing. Introspective writing also plays an important role and accompanies the process, inviting everyone to connect sensations, gestures, and reflections.

The workshop encourages improvisation, curiosity, and play, while creating a collective map of living things and inviting participants to reconnect with their sensitive relationship to nature.

꩜

The workshop will be held in the Plein Sud Educational Space located at 150 De Gentilly Street East, room D0626, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Space is limited, so reservations are required and must be made before Thursday, November 13, 2025.

Biography

Noémie Sauvageau

Picture : Thomas Loiselle, 4 year-old

Noémie Sauvageau cultivates a deep love for life in all its forms. Her career, marked by a wide range of experiences—including teaching, coaching, creation, and research—has nurtured a sensitive understanding of our connections, our vulnerability, and the subtle forces that link us to nature. Trained in philosophy, she approaches thought as an embodied, porous gesture.

Rooted in her hypersensitive relationship with the world, her artistic practice is first and foremost a way of inhabiting the world. Poetry, experimentation, and play become tools for interaction and understanding. She considers play to be a form of gentle resistance, a space for discovery where we learn to dialogue with living things rather than constrain or dominate them. The creative act is a way of listening, of connecting, in the same way that she gardens, approaches a stranger, or cooks.

Silent Auction of Two Iconic Artworks

Alongside the raffle, Plein sud is also presenting two artworks in a silent auction, chosen for their strong connection to the center’s history.

The first piece is by Cozic, an essential duo in contemporary art. Plein sud dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to them in Longueuil in 1998, as well as the most comprehensive monograph on the duo to date. Monic Brassard (of Cozic) also served as chair of Plein sud’s board for more than ten years, leaving a lasting mark through her commitment and vision. The artwork up for auction comes from a private donation, reflecting the esteem and long-standing relationship between Cozic and Plein sud.

Unique artwork

The second artwork is generously offered for the occasion by Bertrand Carrière, a prominent figure in contemporary photography in Quebec with whom Plein sud has maintained a long-standing relationship. In 2007, he created an ambitious photographic project for the center to mark the 350th anniversary of Longueuil, resulting in a body of work highlighting the dialogue between art, history, and urban space. A major monograph published in 2020 traced his work up to that point, showcasing the richness, coherence, and evolution of his practice. His entire body of work, attentive to memory, territory, and visual storytelling, holds a significant place in the history of Plein sud as well as in that of Longueuil.

Brackish Bodies

Fascinated by bogs and wetland environments, Maria Simmons explores concepts of contamination, fermentation, and preservation through works that intertwine science, folklore, and mythology. The exhibition Brackish Bodies, presented as part of Manifestation JE/US 2025, creates a liminal space where past and present, surface and underground, the living and the non-living intersect. Rooted in the artist’s experience of the
St. Lawrence River and peatland ecosystems, this new installation combines ceramics, reeds, seaweed, tannic water, saltwater, and freshwater. Brackish Bodies opens up possible ways of reconnecting with our environment and with the immemorial natural phenomena that shape it.

Launch of ESPACE art actuel's new issue, Minerals

Launch of ESPACE art actuel's new issue, Minerals. Issue 141 bears witness to the emergence of a geological consciousness in contemporary art, attentive to memories and past lives buried in rocky mountains, open-pit quarries or manufactured goods. Artists are inquisitive and critical when considering the presence of minerals, their expressiveness and their ability to act on and modulate their environments. More than just landscape elements, the study of these minerals and stones reveals the surprising itineraries of matter and the interdependence of the globe’s regions and the bodies covering it.

ESPACE art actuel is a bilingual (French and English) magazine founded in Montreal in 1987 by the Centre de diffusion 3D (CDD3D), a non-profit organization. Dedicated to promoting artistic practices related to the notion of spatiality, the magazine publishes three issues a year (January, May, September) and holds an online platform. It also organizes activities such as discussions, round tables, and conferences that contribute to sharing knowledge and stimulating reflection regarding the status of art within an ever-changing cultural landscape.

This return to Montréal brings the artist duo back to the very place where they first met in 2020, during a creative residency that marked the beginning of their collaboration. Since then, the building that houses Espace Transmission has been revitalized—just like the duo’s practice, which now embraces new material explorations. This re-presentation becomes an opportunity to bring together the works, the artists, and their place of origin in a renewed temporality, where space and matter are transformed.

The demi-mesure artist book will be available for purchase at a cost of 50$ on-site throughout the event.

Plein sud warmly invites the public to the closing event on July 3 at Espace Transmission where the recipient of the 2025 Plein sud Grant we also be announced.
